Fine Art: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
"Reaching for Air" captures a moment of pure motion and emotional intensity, where the dancer’s leap embodies both a physical and psychological quest for freedom. The image is a study in contrasts—between the elegance of her form and the wildness of her flowing hair, between the strength of her pose and the fragility of her expression. The black and white palette accentuates these contrasts, stripping the scene of distractions and allowing the viewer to focus on the raw, elemental beauty of the movement.
Inspired by the introspective style of Francesca Woodman, this photograph explores themes of yearning and escape. The title, "Reaching for Air," suggests a longing for release, as if the dancer is momentarily breaking free from the confines of gravity and seeking something beyond the tangible world. Her extended limbs and outstretched posture evoke a sense of reaching toward something just out of grasp—perhaps a breath of clarity, a moment of liberation, or an unspoken desire.
The use of light and shadow plays a crucial role in creating the image’s emotional atmosphere. Shadows pool beneath her, suggesting the weight of what she leaves behind, while the light catches the curve of her body, illuminating her upward movement. This interplay between light and darkness mirrors the internal struggle between constraint and freedom.
This photograph is not just a celebration of physical grace; it is an invitation to reflect on the human desire for transcendence and the delicate tension between strength and vulnerability. "Reaching for Air" invites viewers to immerse themselves in the fleeting, ethereal moment, to feel the weight of the air around them, and to contemplate the hidden depths of our own aspirations and struggles.
AUTHOR
I'm a nude photographer based in Spain. My work is influenced by the sculptures of Ancient Greece and starts from the premise that aesthetics precedes the message. My message is essentially influenced by Carl Gustav Jung's concept of analytical psychology, especially the concept of "persona".
My work focuses on the symbolic use if postures and shapes, the play of shadows/light, textures. The scenes I photograph are made up of few elements. Normally a single subject, lots of negative space, no accessories (or rarely). The essential meaning of the message is transmitted by the isolated body.
