Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
If I were to write a memoir of my life, the byline might read, “A Mix of Melancholy and Apathy.” Not because I don’t have a great life—I certainly do. But those are two predominant themes of my inner life. Photography is a medium that allows me to seek and feel something more in the world. To create beauty from the mundane, to turn indifference into passion, and apathy into empathy.
My work focuses on long-term landscape projects that allow me to create connections to a place over time. This photograph highlights work made in southern Oregon as part of a larger series of images documenting the American West.
The coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest in particular have captivated my attention, as it has for many photographers through the years. Perhaps it can be easily explained scientifically by the moisture levels in the air and how it creates a unique softness in photographs. Or maybe it's something more innately familiar. I grew up thousands of miles away from where I made this photograph, however it feels like home to me. Like a ruffled blanket laying on a made bed, it invites you to come and rest for a little while.
