Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Photography allows me to slow down and capture beauty that never ceases to catch my attention as I move through the world. An art form like no other, it serves as a catalyst for gratitude, and brings my focus to the present moment. A blend of documentary and carefully composed frames, my work tends to be haunting and melancholic, reflecting my love of nature, and fascination with spirituality and humanity.
My current series, "Modern Ferrotype," is a commentary on our world’s obsession with image capturing, immediacy, and technology. The constant use of mobile devices can feel toxic as it keeps me tethered and disconnected from the world. By primarily using a cellular phone camera, I seek to transform the very device I dislike into a grounding instrument for lasting art. I then manipulate my work using modern technology to recreate early photography techniques, such as ferrotype, resulting in a look from a bygone era.
"Modern Ferrotype Series: Sheep" was taken in the English countryside. I feel most at peace among sheep and other animals in idyllic pastoral settings such as this one.
