Enigmatic gateway to ancient burial mounds by Jacob-Carl Pauw (Netherlands)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
We find ourselves in the middle of the heath in Stroe, the Netherlands. These mysterious dead oak trees form the gateway to the ancient burial mounds of our forefathers. One large burial mound lies on this side of the so-called entrance, a couple of meters back on the heath. Several objects from the Iron Age have been found in this area, such as pottery and an ancient dagger or spearhead.
The dead oaks evoked a melancholic feeling in me and my thoughts wandered off to long bygone times, when our ancestors still lived here off the hunt and farming. It is hard to imagine that bears once roamed here.
After some experiments with my 14mm ultra wide-angle lens, I decided to return to this spot on a misty morning. When the day broke, I could start right away because I had already determined the composition. I only needed to position my two strobes. The artificial light that came from the right and the left, created a mysterious atmosphere, as if the sun was breaking through thick clouds, while the fog is floating through the forest in the distance.
I am very happy with this photograph, especially after realizing that I can’t take this picture again because most of the bark has fallen off the trees on the right by now. This would create an imbalance. So this is one of those examples of a moment in the past you captured for eternity, before it’s gone…
