Crown Shyness by Alexander Fattal (United States)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
In mid-winter, bare trees in the US midwest clearly show "crown shyness", a phenomenon where the tops of trees grow to allow gaps between their canopies. It isn't known for sure, but it is hypothesized that this an evolutionary trait protecting the branches from wind damage.
