Portrait: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
"Poor", "alcoholic", "savage", "a lot of subsidies", "only relying on the bonus point policy", these are visible and invisible discriminatory labels for Taiwan's indigenous peoples. Yulung and her friends are both indigenous peoples . They grow with these labels.
Yulung is an indigenous girl from the Atayal tribe. Since she left her tribe, everything in the city has made her feel suffocated. Every discriminatory word seemed to dig into her heart like a knife.
"I study very hard in school, but no matter how well I perform, they just say: 'You just rely on extra points!' and they try to erase all my efforts..."
"It took me a long time to adapt and tell myself not to cry. I can perform better than these people and will continue to work hard to make myself better."
