Portrait: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This series of black and white photographs captures the essence of a 69-year-old woman, a silent fighter against advanced ovarian cancer. In her home, the intimate and familiar atmosphere, concealed by a wrinkled black backdrop, highlights her strength and vulnerability. Each shot tells the story of her resilience and daily courage. I chose black and white to emphasize the emotions and the details of her face and body marked by the illness and ongoing struggle. Many women are affected by this serious condition every year. The woman had the courage to be portrayed, making an often invisible struggle visible, a tribute to human dignity. I created this series on 07/14/2024 at the woman's home in Rome, using an improvised backdrop for privacy. The woman asked me to create this project to bring news of what is happening in a parallel world that few know about.
AUTHOR
Born in 1970 in Rome, Alex Chiapparelli began photographing at the age of 8, later pursuing artistic studies in fine arts and graphics, including photography as a subject during high school. Coming from an analog background, he started using reflex cameras in 1981 and, working in darkrooms from 1989 to 1992, he delved deeper into photography. Subsequently, in 2001, he began collaborating with photographer Fernando Muscinelli, opening a professional, multidirectional path for his passion, experimenting and working on projects of various kinds and styles.
Graduating from the art high school in 1989, he acquired an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, integrating it into a technical-artistic approach. He developed skills in the use of photographic lenses and lighting systems, which he also applied through the study of painting and drawing.
In addition to his commitment to photography, he has cultivated writing since adolescence and honed his skills at the Omero Creative Writing School in Rome in 2018. He also embarked on a journey in the cinematic field and as a videomaker, producing short films that have won and competed in international festivals. This allowed him not only to experiment with the synergy between different forms of art but also to expand his professional expertise.
