Bound Feet and Redemption: A Portrait of Hope by qing ye (China)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
An elderly woman with bound feet cradles a painting of the "Savior," her face etched with time but her eyes alight with an ageless hope for beauty, redemption, and a boundless future. Foot-binding, once a symbol of feminine beauty in ancient China, wrought immense physical and psychological harm on women. The "Savior" in her grasp, emblematic of Western religious hope and deliverance, starkly contrasts with her past, resonating deeply in the image. Her gaze seems to converse with the Savior's, seeking a spiritual liberation that transcends her bodily suffering.
