Portrait: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Emma, 2023 Arezzo, Italy
I can say that the person I have seen and lived with the most in my life is Emma. I have so many memories with Emma, my grandmother.
It's strange how as they age, people revert a bit to being children; they complain when they have to wash, they go from laughter to tears in a flash.
Emma spends much of her time at the window, observing the world passing by like a spectator in a movie theater; she gets excited when she sees a dog walking by or trees changing color with the seasons.
Why these pictures? Because photographing my grandmother is an exchange. Interaction creates the photograph and at the same time, it's a way to involve her in what I do.
My grandmother is beautiful. I see an intensity in her when she knows she's being photographed, a pride that strikes me. I feel the need to make her understand that she's important to me. I want to give her attention, I want our moments to be preserved.
Photographing my grandmother means focusing on what it means to be elderly and no longer self-sufficient. Elderly people are not stupid, they shouldn't be put in a corner, considered no longer useful to society.
The elderly are a treasure trove of wealth, experience, and unique emotions.
We are social beings even at 90. The loneliness of our grandparents is a current and urgent issue, which often has dramatic consequences on their health, as it increases the risk at the immune and cardiovascular levels, causes sleep disturbances, reduces cognitive abilities, and can inevitably lead to depression.
The phrase "photograph what you know" I have experienced and understood through this project.
Here is my heart.
