Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Hama is a son of Cecil, a popular lion that was lured out of a national park and killed. On the cloudy morning that we saw Hama about fifty-five kilometers south of his father's territory, we also saw that his partner was severely injured. Later the partner died and Hama migrated north. My art is about disappearing animals in Africa. I’m interested in their power and fragility. With a converted infrared camera, I strive to capture the essence of each animal in black-and-white images that will stand the test of time. The reality is that time is running out for these creatures. They need our help. Lions are considered Vulnerable, with a population of around 20,000.
AUTHOR
Marilyn is a fine art photographer living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was born in Ft. Worth, Texas. Her love of African wildlife began in childhood with trips to the zoo with her dad. Marilyn studied painting and art history at Texas Christian University during the 1980s. A trip to Africa in the late 1990s sparked a passion for photography as her creative medium of choice. Her early portfolios focused on spiritual practices in Mexico and Guatemala. A trip to Tanzania in 2013 revealed how much trouble the animals were in, and the series, “At Risk” began. Using a converted infrared camera she strives to capture the body and soul of each animal in black and white images that will stand the test of time. The reality is that time is running out for these creatures. Artist’s portion of sale proceeds will go to Long Reach Foundation, which supports human-wildlife conflict mitigation projects in Zimbabwe.
