Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2024 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I photographed my polar bear in Svalbard, in 2023.
It was very late in the afternoon and the sun was quite low.
After spotting the bear on the beach, we quickly got into our dinghy and headed in its direction.
We were able to observe him well from a distance of about 20-30 meters. He had probably killed a seal and seemed to be quite full.
At least there wasn't much left of his food.
With his full belly, he trotted towards the sun along the beach.
The further he walked, the more he moved into a right angle to the sun.
It became apparent that the setting sun would soon illuminate it head-on from behind.
Would the light stay on until the polar bear was right and our boat was in the right position?
Things got hectic now as we tried to do everything at once, before the sun disappeared.
Position the boat at the right angle, take a low position, and photograph the bear at the right moment, because all of his legs should be seen.
The sun disappeared very fast and the opportunity was gone.
What an amazing moment when I saw a photo was exactly as I had hoped
