Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2025 (amateur)
Auroa Australis (Southern Lights) Avoca Beach by Richard O'Farrell (Australia)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I had heard on the news that the Southern Lights could be seen as far north as the coast of New South Wales, Australia. Normally, these lights are only visible in southern regions, such as Tasmania. For two weeks, I traveled to Avoca Beach in New South Wales to catch a glimpse of the lights, but each night was met with overcast skies.
Then, one night around 10 PM, I went down to the beach. To my delight, the skies were clear, and I was able to witness the magnificent Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) flickering in the dark. For two hours, I watched the lights in their full glory over the sea. As a black-and-white photographer, I believe my photograph truly captures the beauty of the Southern Lights.
To my amazement, this was the second time I had experienced such a sight. A lone yacht was out at sea, and the juxtaposition of the lights and the yacht created a photograph and a moment I will never forget.
