ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The Serengeti is a unique and magical place. An enormous savannah grassland matched by gigantic skies. The Serengeti ecosystem owes its characteristics to Ol Doinyo Lengai 'Mountain of God' that ejected rich calcium carbonate ash that was deposited and then dissolved by the heavy rains to create an impermeable layer called calcrete. This hard crust within a metre of the surface, prevents trees from taking root and allows grass and sedges to thrive, thereby creating the perfect hunting ground for the fastest cat on earth.
