Polar bear mother and her two cute cubs by Hua Zhu (United States)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Mother polar bears face tremendous challenges in raising their cubs, especially in the harsh Arctic environment. They go without food or water for months. In spring, the mother must lead her cubs to the sea ice, where she can finally hunt seals again—often after fasting for up to eight months. Catching prey is extremely difficult immediately after emerging from the den.
