Fine Art: Honorable Mention 2025 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The Baroque master Francesco Borromini’s famous staircase, called "The Ellipse", found in the Palazzo Barernin in Rome, was completed in 1634. It is celebrated for its architectural ingenuity and masterful use of light. Designed with a flattened oval plan, the stairwell offers a gentler ascent than a traditional spiral, guiding the viewer upward through a rhythmic sequence of 12 Doric double columns. Each capital is adorned with sculpted bees—the emblem of the Barberini family—marking each turn. Natural light filters through a central oculus and facade windows, animating the space with shifting patterns of illumination and shadow.
