Fine Art: Honorable Mention 2025 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Silence is often imagined as an absence, an empty space, a void, a pause between moments. But in this photograph, silence becomes something tangible, something that can be held, felt and even worn. The veiled figure stands against a soft, blurred backdrop of water, her face completely concealed beneath flowing white fabric. In this concealment, the image invites viewers to consider the weight of what remains unspoken.
The hand gently gripping the cloth suggests an inner conflict: the desire to reveal and the instinct to retreat. It is a gesture of both protection and restraint, echoing the quiet battles many people fight within themselves. Wrapped in a dark jacket, the figure contrasts sharply with the lightness of the veil, symbolizing the tension between external expectation and internal truth. The monochrome palette deepens the emotional resonance, stripping the scene of distractions and allowing the viewer to focus on form, texture and meaning.
“Silence Has a Shape” explores the idea that identity is not only expressed through the face but also through posture, presence and the fragile spaces where vulnerability lives. It suggests that silence is not emptiness but expression. It carries memories, fears, strength and transformation. In the stillness of the frame, the viewer is invited to interpret the unseen face, to imagine the voice behind the quiet, and to reflect on their own unspoken stories.
This image becomes a universal portrait of the human condition: the parts of ourselves we hide, the truths we carry and the delicate balance between exposure and refuge. Silence, here, is not a void; it is a shape, molded by experience, resilience and the quiet courage to simply exist.
This Art was taken at Usman Dam Abuja, Nigeria 7th July 2025.
