Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2025 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Whilst shooting Race Around Rwanda in February 2025 I came across this group of men repairing a bicycle.
The bike is an essential mode of transport in Rwanda, not just to get around but to move goods from one place to another.
Cargo riders can regularly be seen hurtling down any of Rwanda's "thousand hills" with huge payloads - think a whole banana tree worth of bananas - whilst wearing only flip-flops.
These cargo bikes are heavily reinforced with iron rebar to allow them to handle the large loads, which is what is being done to this bike in the image. The man working on the bike is wearing only sunglasses to protect his eyes, and I was reliably informed by one of the Race Around Rwanda riders that they won't be as effective as he thinks they're being in the long-term.
