Photomanipulation: Honorable Mention 2025 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Hutomanipulation is a big project in which I tried to show, describe, and create an image of a place that is very dear to me – Nowa Huta. It’s a place where I grew up and where I live now.
This photograph, created in the gum bichromate technique, is part of that exploration.
The main driving force here was the architecture of Nowa Huta (especially its oldest part). I wanted to create forms, places, and spaces that never existed – mixing locations that are distant from each other, or creating an axis of symmetry where there is none. I was strongly convinced that it should be a black-and-white image, with deep blacks. I chose a single-layer bichromate print, using carbon black as the pigment. I wanted the picture to feel dirty, a bit industrial – so that the character of the place and its architecture would be enhanced by manipulation and a strong layer of soot.
