Street: Honorable Mention 2025 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
On the quiet of Holy Saturday, the streets of Canosa (Italy) come alive with a silent yet powerful wave: hundreds of women dressed in black, their faces veiled in impenetrable mourning, accompany the Desolate Madonna in her desperate search for her Son. It is an ancient rite where sacred sorrow blends with pagan tradition, and personal grief becomes collective.
In this shot, the black veil a symbol of respect and intimate grief becomes translucent, revealing the faint outline of a woman’s face. That barely visible face, suspended between light and shadow, becomes the emblem of a universal mourning: that of a mother, a community, a humanity sharing the weight of loss. The white hands, contrasting with the dark garments, heighten the tension between life and death, presence and absence. A moment of rare intensity, where the sacred blends with the deeply human.
