Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2025 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I was snorkelling off the west coast of Dominica, which is a hotspot for sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), when I saw this individual slowly emerging from the Caribbean Sea depths into the sunlight.
The sperm whale is such extraordinary looking animal, and all the more dramatic in black and white, which also gives a sense of depth (sperm whales are among the deepest diving mammals) even though it was probably no more than 40 feet / 12 metres below the surface. Photograph taken under Government Department licence.
